Best Cryptocurrencies for Beginners

Crypto is significantly more volatile than stocks. A 30-50% drawdown in a few weeks is normal. It's 'safe' only if you invest money you can afford to lose entirely and stick to established projects (like the ones on this page). Start with Bitcoin and Ethereum, learn how wallets and exchanges work, and never invest your emergency fund.

Most financial advisors suggest 5-10% of your investment portfolio at most. Some recommend starting with an amount small enough that losing it entirely would not affect your life. The goal is to learn with real skin in the game without risking financial stability.

Bitcoin is primarily a store of value: digital gold. It does one thing (transfer value) and does it securely. Ethereum is a programmable platform: a decentralised computer that runs applications (DeFi, NFTs, smart contracts). Think of Bitcoin as digital gold and Ethereum as a digital app store. Most beginners should own both.

Through a platform licensed by the regulator that covers where you are. In the UAE that is VARA for Dubai outside the DIFC, the DFSA inside the DIFC, the FSRA for ADGM in Abu Dhabi, and the SCA federally; Bahrain licenses crypto-asset services through the Central Bank of Bahrain. Saudi Arabia has no dedicated retail licensing regime yet, and Qatar's QFC digital-asset framework deliberately excludes cryptocurrencies. Registers change, so check the regulator's current list rather than a platform's own claim, and prefer one that supports local-currency deposits and lists the coins you actually want.

ETFs first for most people. A broad market ETF like VOO gives you diversified exposure to the world's best companies with far less volatility. Once you have a solid ETF foundation, adding 5-10% in crypto is reasonable diversification. Crypto should complement your portfolio, not replace it.

Scholars genuinely disagree, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Those who permit it treat a major cryptocurrency as a tradeable asset like any other, provided the intent is investment rather than gambling. Those who do not point to gharar, the excessive uncertainty in an asset with no cash flows and no underlying claim, and to how much of the activity around it is pure speculation. Between the two poles, most reasoning turns on whether a specific token does something real rather than on crypto as a category. Some structures raise separate questions regardless of that: lending your coins for a fixed return looks a lot like interest, and leveraged trading carries the same objection here as it does in currencies.
